The Mission of Jesus

Before Jesus ever issued the Great Commission, He demonstrated the heart behind it. In Matthew 9, He moved through towns and villages teaching, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease. When He looked at the crowds, He did not simply observe them. He saw people who were troubled and tossed, confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. That compassion was not passive. It moved Him to call laborers into the harvest and ultimately to send His disciples into the world. The same mission belongs to every follower of Christ today, not because of a program or a strategy, but because of what Jesus modeled and what He commanded.
One of the greatest obstacles to living out that mission is the way we see people. Social media algorithms are engineered around envy and outrage, quietly shaping how we view those who look, think, vote, or believe differently than we do. Choosing to see people through the lens of Jesus rather than through a curated feed is an act of intentional discipleship. It requires prayer. Jesus did not tell His disciples to build a plan first. He told them to pray, to ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into His fields. Prayer is not the afterthought of mission. It is the starting point.
Jesus chose ordinary people to carry the gospel, and that pattern has not changed. The twelve disciples were largely unknown, without credentials or platforms, yet they were given authority and sent with purpose. Christianity spread through the Roman Empire largely through ordinary believers faithfully sharing their faith one person at a time. That same model applies today. Every believer has a unique connection with someone outside the church that no one else has. That connection is not an accident. It is an assignment. The Holy Spirit already lives within every believer, supplying the power, authority, and wisdom needed for the mission. The most effective tool is not a polished argument but a personal story of what Jesus has done, shared freely with the people already in your life.
