What are You Hungry for?

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” — Matthew 5:6 (NLT)
Jesus used the image of physical hunger to reveal a deeper truth—a spiritual craving that only God can satisfy. In the ancient world, hunger and thirst were daily struggles, yet Jesus declared that true fulfillment comes to those who long for God’s righteousness above everything else. This beatitude challenges us to ask: What am I truly hungry for?
Spiritual hunger is a mark of grace. It drives us to know God more deeply, to live in holiness through the power of the Holy Spirit, and to do what is right in a broken world. Hunger for righteousness means craving a life aligned with God’s will—being made right with Him, living rightly before Him, and doing right toward others.
We cultivate this holy appetite by feeding on God’s Word, spending time in prayer and worship, seeking continual renewal by the Holy Spirit, walking in repentance and obedience, and surrounding ourselves with others who are passionately pursuing God.
Though we taste God’s peace and joy now, complete satisfaction awaits when we see Christ face to face. As John Stott wrote, “The Christian’s hunger is not for happiness but for holiness. Blessed are those who are not satisfied until they are like Christ in heart, mind, and behavior.” Our greatest blessing is to never lose our hunger for Him.
